Personal Training?…?

I’m looking into possibly enlisting in the Coast Guard next year (late summer / early fall 2009). I’ve been thinking about working with a personal trainer to get into peak physical shape, so that not only do I “get-by” at basic training, I blow through it from a physical perspective.

Using that timeframe, when should I seriously commit to a training regimen? I was thinking January / February, but I realize it may take longer to reach “peak” shape (I’m looking to improve everything including cardio-muscular endurance, muscular strength, and overall muscular tone).

Anybody have any tips / pointers / recommendations from their own personal training experiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that you are in OK shape when you start getting serious, I would give yourself 3-4 months. I would be working on lifting/strength training now, then intense cardio in the last few months.

as a personal trainer heres a few bits of advice:
the sooner you start you quicker you will reach your goal
it will be hard but the harder you push yourself the bigger the rewards will be.
speak to a few personal trainers and go with the one who is focussed solely on your goals and not theirs.
set yourself realistic goals and work toward sthem

Well, you asked for personal experience, so here’s mine. I hired a personal trainer at my gym last year to get in shape for my wedding. I paid BANK for the trainer, and all I got was an over-priced counter. If you want to pay someone to count your reps for you then hire a trainer, otherwise I would suggest working out on your own daily and eating right. Oh, did I forget to mention, I tried 3 of thier trainers because I was so frustrated. I couldn’t believe what little “training” I was getting for what I paid.

    -Good Luck
